Recycling and reusing

There are two recycling stations on the ground and first levels of At-Bristol so visitors can recycle paper, cans and plastic.

As an organisation, we recycle our own and visitors’ paper, cardboard, plastic, aluminium cans and steel tins. We have an on-site baler that compacts the waste and makes it easier to collect.

We also reuse wood and recycle printer cartridges, batteries and metal from our exhibitions, and recycle any glass used when At-Bristol is hired for corporate or private events.

Water Management

We monitor our water usage on a monthly basis and sub-meter in four locations.

The building is fitted with a range of water saving measures:

  • Waterless urinals in all toilets
  • Showers with a flow rate of 6 litres per minute and sinks with a flow rate of a maximum of 7 litres per minute
  • All flushes are 6 litre volume, from installation or through retrofit reduction

 In addition, we also:

  • Collect rain water from outside pools and use for cleaning
  • Reduce rain water going into sewage through green roofs
  • Sensor taps, water reduction measures in the kitchen
  • Reduced large flush volumes on site using waste plastic bottles
  • Cleaning chemicals designed not to have a negative impact upon the water table and the environment
  • Staff trained and reminded to use water responsibly

Waste Reduction

We try to use less materials in the first instance, and engage in the following to reduce and recycle:

  • Returnable packaging
  • Quantity optimisation
  • Paperless culture (e.g. paperless accounting, filing, and meetings)
  • Ensure materials are used to full extent before disposal
  • Purchase recycled materials, where possible
  • Hazardous waste disposed of responsibly
  • Baler reduces waste volume of cardboard and plastics – available for other local businesses to use for free
  • Recycle paper, cardboard, glass, aluminium and tin cans, steel and metal, soft  and hard plastics, wood, WEEE items, batteries and printer cartridges
  • System for food waste segregation
  • Part of Lab Aid - unwanted laboratory equipment sent to schools in developing countries
